Disney vs Universal

Matt-is there any chance Disney decided to bring back Captain EO, in Epcot -not Disneyland, as a cheap way to steal some people away from the Harry Potter land? Say what you will about Universal, but Harry Potter is a huge phenomen, and if Disney stayed complacement, they would have lost a lot of non-diehard attendance, especially since many not in the know are thinking that HP is an entirelly new park due to the mismarketing by Universal. I'm not sure, but EO and the whole Summer Nightastic just seems like a cheap way to draw locals away from IOA/Harry Potter (the new ride is great btw and better than Soarin').

I don't get the HISTA hate. Sure it was dated, but I think it was an amazing show when it opened and I enjoyed it up until it closed. It had the best in theater effects of any 3D show Disney has ever done and you can't deny how great the original score was. Personally I enjoyed HISTA more than Philharmagic and about equal to ITTBAB, but nothing touches Muppet Vision.

I'm also not so much on board with the HISTA hate parade. Granted the movie inspiration behind the show is a bit old, but aren't the films that inspired many of the classic attractions in Disney a bit old as well, and that's why we like attractions based on them? For those of us bringing first timers to WDW, or for those guests who only visit the parks once every few years, HISTA was still fun. That being said though, I do agree that it's probably time to replace HISTA, and for the repeat guest it was past its prime about a decade ago. I do think Disney should come up with something new and I'm hoping that Captain EO is just a brief stop-gap before something more exciting and innovative comes along.

I am surprised at how the guests hated HISTA.
It's a dated ride and it is time for it to move on, but when it debuted it was BETTER than EO.
EO had become old and dated and guests didn't line up for it anymore. When HISTA debuted the mice effect and the moving theater effect were astonishing. However, these effects have been done again (and better) in Tough to Be a Bug and Philharmagic; and the concept of 3D no longer excites guests.
When EO was pulled Michael Jackson was a despised figure and Disney took the chance to get some positive PR by removing a dated attraction. HISTA was popular and well attended in it's early years (and was one of the showcases of Disney's promotional materials for the park.)
Now, it's time to for HISTA to go. As a temporary replacement EO is great (because of it's nostalgia value) but hopefully something new and more exciting it on the way.
imagination pavilion in general

the problem is not just HISTA or EO... it's the pavilion... the whole thing is just sad and needs some tlc. of course, I understand without a new sponsor (or a viable sponsor not in financial trouble), it's easier said than done. I would love to see a complete (pardon the phrase) re-imagination of the pavilion without losing the original EPCOT feel. again... easier said than done.
