Just a comment on the Auto-Train. There is something out there called a "loading gauge", that determines the different size railcars that can travel around the country. Not surprisingly, there are different "plates" for different regions.

Not running north of DC has nothing to do with the overhead cantenary. It's the First Street Tunnel, under the US capitol to Union station. The autoracks are 20 feet tall; the tunnel is only 17. This is also why we don't get the Superliner coaches and sleepers on the Northeast Corridor.

Another train thing that is that all trains have to stop around DC so that the engines can be switched from electric powered (used northward) to diesel powered (used southward).

LOL! I just listened to this podcast in the car and was surprised to hear my questions answered. I didn't see my question on the show notes, and now I know why. It's Lee from Houston, not Ali from Houston! Chalk it up to Matt's fast talking. Either way, great episode as always. Thanks guys!
