Two reasons why golf is here to stay (and one why it might go)

Just a couple quick comments about why golf at WDW isn't going anywhere.

First, if you're going to be a convention hotel for high-end clients (doctors, lawyers, CEOs, etc.) you need to have access to a golf course. As the Contemporary does a lot of high-end conferences, I don't think they'd want to risk losing those bookings.

Second, and probably more importantly, golf courses provide natural environments for wildlife and help meet some of the wetland preservation goals, while still allowing for a way to make money. I don't know what sort of tax benefits are available because of that, but I would guess that there's plenty of reasons to subsidize keeping the golf courses around.

And why it might be going somewhere--the PGA Tour dropped the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic this year. That's a huge loss, and shows less of a focus on maintaining golf cred.

As you know, Disney signed a 20 year deal with Palmer Golf in 2011 to take over operations of the Disney World golf courses. I wrote an editorial about the transition here:

There is no question that five 18 hole course were too many. The Eagle Pines is now gone to make room for Golden Oak and the new Four Seasons resort and the Osprey Ridge is now closed and will transfer to the aforementioned sometime in 2014.

That leaves the original three courses, the Palm, Magnolia and Lake Buena Vista, along with Oak Trail, the nine hole course.

The Palm is currently undergoing a major renovation and will re-open sometime in December due to weather related delays. I am hoping that both the Magnolia and LBV courses will undergo their own renovations in due course (pardon the pun).

That Disney World lost the PGA Tour event is the result of many factors and I covered some of them here:

There needs to be some substantial change in marketing strategy to achieve growth in play at the Disney World courses, given the competition in the Orlando area. The new Player's Club membership is part of that, to attract more locals to the courses. It would be great, if in time, the professional tours come back to Disney World, preferably earlier in the year, as I wrote in my editorial. I agree that convention business is a part of the strategy and it will be interesting to see what Palmer Golf does in that domain.

Time till tell. Golf itself is still undergoing industry wide changes and it will likely be some time before we know how Palmer's strategies will play out. I am optimistic that golf at Disney World can attain a greater volume of play and visibility in time.

It seemed like the show had 2 different topics, 1) get rid of something 2) change WDW policy or operations. Evening out opening times and extending monorail hours are policy changes. I would add extending bar and night club closing times to 2 am to these policy changes. Getting rid of most of Dinoland or Tomorrowland speedway or race track or backlot tour were on topic. I agree with each of these but think DHS catering company should go (it is outdoors) and Backlot express (indoors with AC) should stay.

I was listening to your comments on what should stay and what should go and I was thinking that yeah that should go, that should stay and I was fine then someone said that the chicken place in Downtown Disney was good. I put up with the comments on Capt'n Jacks, but this went too far, I have NEVER gotten anything that was even remotely mediocre at that place and if it was replaced with a KFC the food would be far better. That chicken makes me miss the McDonald's that was there before. I again believe that you are just trying to steer people to bad restaurants so that you can get into the good ones.

Now on to Golf, maybe you missed it but Eagle Pines and Osprey Ridge are now both closed removing 36 holes from the Disney 99 holes of golf, perhaps you might want to also keep up on things you are not all that interested in along with the things you like.

One of the things that was said that I agree with is that Chester and Hesters needs to be closed and shipped out. I'm not sure you recall this but Dinoland used to have a large dinosaur display, while that was not as fun as a ride, it was better than the rides that are there now. I agree that that area needs better attractions, but I also believe that the Dinosaur theme should stay, just not the cheep tourist trap way it is now.

After listening to this episode I was reminded why it is a good idea that Disney doesn't make their decisions about what goes and stays based on individual whims (or at least not our individual whims...).

Jeez, debbie downers!

I've been planning a foray to The World in 2016 for quite some time now, but after this podcast, I'm not so sure. (Disneyland still beckons.)

If I only listened to this podcast, I'd have to ask if it's still worth it to go.

Tell me if I am wrong, but I thought that all Marvel was off limits in WDW because of previous agreements with Universal. If that is true, then anything like a Stark Expo is out.
